He too struggled a lot and sometimes did not have money for even food. Kher would use his light complexion, baldness and ability to imitate and mimic people, specially foreigners.

He would go to eating joints, speak like a foreigner, taste things to full belly and leave. And he says that people really mistook him for some foreigner and never asked for money.

Kher made his acting debut in the 1982 Hindi movie Aagman. Then in 1984 came Saaransh, where he played an aged, retired person having lost his son, and he has never looked back since then.

He is an alumnus and a former chairperson of the National School of Drama. Some of his early roles were in plays performed at the Himachal Pradesh University.

Later he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in Saaransh (1984). He won the National Film Award for Special Mention twice for his performances in Daddy (1989) and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005).

For his performance in the film Vijay (1988), he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
