Causes of Vespasian Death

Vespasian usually spent his summer in Campania. Here in 79AD, he develops a slight illness. So, he decided to return to Rome. However in Rome, his illness worsened and he developed diarrhea.

Due to frequent use of cold water, he soon develop problem in his bowel. Vespasian felt that his end is near proclaimed out “Vae, puto deus fio.” (“Dear me, I think I’m becoming a god”).

Despite of his serious illness, emperor continued to perform his duties and receive embassies.

Vespasian Death

On 28th June 79AD, he had a massive attack of diarrhea. Vespasian felt that he is about to die. Vespasian believed that emperor should not die on his bed and should die standing.  So, he ordered his bodyguard to help him to get on his feet.

While he was struggling to stand up, he died in the arms of his bodyguards. When he died, he was 69 years old.

After his death his eldest sons Titus succeed him and became the first roman emperor to be succeeded by his natural son.
