His early political career can be defined as up to the point of his first election to the Lok Sabha. People elected him President of the Model School Students Union in 1975.

In 1976-77, he participated in underground movement against Emergency but government imprisoned him in Bhopal Jail for some time.

Later he was first elected to the State Assembly from Budhni Constituency in 1990. People elected him a Member of Parliament for the first time in his career in 10th Lok Sabha from Vidisha Constituency in the following year.

In 1996, people re-elected him to the 11th Lok Sabha (his second term). Again in 1998, people re-elected him to 12th Lok Sabha (third term). His fourth term in the Lok Sabha (13th Lok Sabha) was from 1999.

He was member of Committee on Agriculture in 1999-2000, member of Committee on Public Undertakings from 1999 to 2001, and National President of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha from 2000 to 2003.

The BJP swept Madhya Pradesh in the Assembly elections of December 2003. At that time, Shivraj Singh contested polls unsuccessfully against the incumbent Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh from Raghogarh.

As the state BJP President, Chouhan was chosen to become the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on 30 November 2005. He contested a by-election from Budhni assembly constituency the following year, winning his old seat by a margin of over 36,000 votes.

Madhya Pradesh was tagged as Bimaru state, the state’s economy and infrastructure were crippling before Shivraj Singh Chouhan came on to the scene.

Soon Madhya Pradesh has become one of the fastest developing states in the country, although, the state is still among some of the poorest states in the country. Over the last 15 years, there has been a significant improvement in the development of Madhya Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh is fast emerging as a state with the 24×7 power supply to all electricity consumers in the state. Later the Chief Minister has pledged to complete electrification of all the villages within the state by October 2, 2018. The state will be providing minimum eight-hours of uninterrupted electricity for agriculture works.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan has emphasised on the immense possibilities in the tourism sector in the state and has worked towards developing the industry, that in turn has created employment, strengthened state’s economy and increased the influx of tourists.

In 2007, he had introduced schemes named as Ladli Laxmi Yojna, Kanyadhan Yojna and Janani Suraksha Yojna to focus on the prevention of female infanticide in the state. “Medhavi Vidhyati Yojana” and “Medhavi Chhatra Yojna” to 70% in 12th MP Board Bhopal and 85% CBSE Delhi 2019.
