Bollywood legend Nana Patekar was born as Vishwanath Patekar on 1 January 1951 in Murud-Janjira in Raigad District, Maharashtra.

Nana Patekar Family

Patekar was born as Vishwanath Patekar to Dinkar Patekar, who was a painter, and Sanjanabai Patekar. His father died of a heart attack when Nana Patekar was 28 and later Patekar also lost his first son.

His father loved plays and encouraged him to watch them. He is an atheist but continues to celebrate the Ganesh festival due to tradition. Patekar was a chain smoker until the age of 56 after which he quit.

He married Neelkanti at the age of 27. Nana got married to Neelakanti who was a banker by profession but also did theatre. Soon after their marriage, they had a son. His son had a number of health issues.

His 2-year-old son, who already had health problems became unwell. Deep inside, Nana knew that the child was about to die. The couple gave him all the possible medical help but he could not survive.

He started staying quiet and depressed. This continued until Nana had his second son Malhar who changed him and made him full of life again.

Nana Patekar Biography

He is said to have a unique acting style. He is famous for his brash style of delivering his dialogues and his way of speaking reflects his deliverance of the lines. It is widely rumoured that he ad libs all of his lines and is held in high regard for this ability.

He is also a sketch artist, a secret not known to the outside world. His sketches have sometimes helped the Mumbai Police to track criminals.

He is an alumnus of the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. His debut film was Gaman (1978), after which he did several small roles in Marathi cinema. He did the role of Nathuram Godse in the British television series Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy.

He had notable roles in Aaj Ki Awaz (1984), Ankush (1986), Pratighaat (1987), Mohre (1987), Trishagni (1988), Awam (1987) and Sagar Sangam (1988).

Later his performance in Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! (1988) was praised. Mainstream Hindi Cinema noticed him for his portrayal of a crime lord in Parinda (1989). He won his first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

Government of India gave Patekar the Padma Shri award for his dedication in the field of Films and Arts in 2013 on the eve of 64th Republic Day. Patekar is the only actor ever to win Filmfare Awards in the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Villain categories.

Patekar did some playback singing in the films Yeshwant (1997), Wajood (1998) and Aanch (2003).

Nana Patekar has really not given as much importance to comedy film as he could have given. Patekar has also done comic roles, such as in Welcome (2007).
